Cholesterol is a smooth, waxy substance found in the human body cells, produced by liver in the form of extra fat and generally found in animal foods like meat, fish, butter, eggs and all dairy products. Other foods like fruit, vegetables don't have cholesterol. Our body needs small amount of cholesterol which is meet to its requirements that helps to keep it healthy . High cholesterol in the body produce the causes of heart disease, heart attacks and other heart problems. Cholesterol is measured in milligrams per deciliter of blood. Less than 200 mg/dL is a desirable level that puts you at lower risk for heart disease. 200 to 239 mg/dL borderline is high and if a person with level of 240 mg/dL and above then he has a more risk of heart disease.
Types of Cholesterol :-
Cholesterol passes throughout the blood and attach to a protein -- this cholesterol-protein pack is called a lipoprotein. Lipoproteins define in many categories like high density, low density, or very low density.
Low density lipoproteins :- Low density lipoproteins (LDL) are recognized as bad cholesterol. This is a combination of fat and protein. If too much LDL is present in the blood it can build up on artery walls and high risk of heart problems.
High density lipoproteins :- High density lipoproteins (HDL) are recognized as good cholesterol .HDL lipoproteins carry cholesterol from the body's tissues to the liver. The higher level of HDLcholesterol is good but if it is very low then the risk of heart diseases become more.
Very low density lipoproteins :- Very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) are similar
to low density lipoproteins it also contains the fat in the whole body.
Triglycerides :- Triglycerides are another type of fat that is travel in the blood by very low density lipoproteins The level of triglycerides are very important. Excess calories, alcohol or sugar in the body are translate into triglycerides and stored in fat cells throughout the body.
